Rope Basket

The Mia Mélange Re-Rope™ Project, it is the first of its kind in South Africa! 

This basket is made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. It will add a contemporary look on any shelf or wall hook.

The process of how a plastic bottle is turned into a piece of rope is very fascinating! Firstly, the plastic bottles are sorted and chipped into very small fine pieces. Then, the small pieces are washed and the plastic labels that surface to the top of the 'baths' are removed. The cleaned chips are then heated, melted and stretched into hair like fibers. These fine fibers are then conditioned. It then almost sticks together as like when human hair has conditioner applied. The strips are then heated and crimped and after that it is combed. The combed fiber is then sent to the mills where they spin the yarn. The yarn is sent to our rope braiders who then braids the rope as per the Mia Mélange requirements and lastly the rope is sent to the studio; At our studio we make the beautiful products!
